How to use this resource

These five Schemes of Work (four Primary and one Secondary) are set out as historical enquiries. Each is organised across four columns. Reading from left to right you will find: the sub-enquiry question and learning objectives; the series of activities designed to explore that question; the outcomes of each sub-enquiry; links to the additional resources needed for each activity. Links to resources open separate PDF format documents (using Adobe Acrobat: Reader). Where we have been unable to obtain permissions for copyrighted material, links to useful websites are provided.

Although the Primary Schemes are linked to Year 2 and Year 6 targets, the activities are adaptable for different year groups. Similarly, the Secondary Scheme could be adapted for older pupils.

Schemes 1-4 (Key Stages 1 and 2) can be read on screen. An overview of Scheme 5 (Key Stage 3) can also be read on screen. There are separate teacher’s guides accompanying each Key Stage 3 enquiry question, which can be accessed by clicking on the appropriate links.   

The Schemes, enquiry questions and activities are ordered in such a way as to gradually develop essential skills and build pupils’ confidence. Ideally, they would be delivered as set out in the resource.

Scheme of Work 1 is best delivered as a whole, across several lessons and in the order in which the units are set out. Schemes of Work 2-4 can be taught as stand-alone units, although Scheme of Work 2 – Enquiry Question 2: What was the Transatlantic Triangular Slave Trade? – provides essential background material. Similarly, Scheme of Work 5: Enquiry Question 1 provides essential background on the Transatlantic Slave Trade, which enquiry questions 2 and 3 are dependent upon. The Scheme can be delivered in part or as a whole, but is best taught in the order in which enquiry questions are set out.
